Grow your influence
If your digital personality doesn’t match the value you provide in person? That’s a problem. Learn why being authentic online so important from author and digital marketing expert Becky Robinson.
I’ve interviewed many authors on stage or my podcast or YouTube channel. Having worked in the publishing industry—and being an author myself—I find topics related to writing, editing, publishing, and promoting books fascinating. That’s why I was so glad to have Becky Robinson on “Aim Higher”. She is the CEO of digital marketing agency Weaving Influence and the author of Reach: Create the Biggest Possible Audience for Your Message. Her firm works with writers on how to more authentically promote themselves, their work, and their ideas online.
Becky has a lot of great advice for authors and other thought leaders looking to expand their online presence. But the single most important thing we discussed was how your online and offline efforts need to be authentic to each other. You must be the same person online as you are when you sit down around the dinner table, and vice versa. And that means you can’t just see digital marketing as a way of “selling stuff,” whether that’s a book or a consulting practice. It’s an extension of you and the value you provide.
What’s the best way to do that? We go over some specifics, but I found myself nodding along in complete agreement when she said, “The more you are able to give away the value you have for free, the more you will draw people to you.” Most of the successful leaders I’ve interviewed over the years live by that rule. They blog or speak or podcast or give interviews for free. Partly to increase their influence and exposure, of course. But the key reason they do so is that they believe they have something important to say. They want to make a difference. They want to help.
Is that you? I hope so. I hope that you want to become a better leader, to be more influential, not just to sell more books or make more money, but to create a future for yourselves and others that is meaningful. Becky is a great mentor for that kind of attitude, and I highly recommend her work.
